Crunching into 2nd? Whining on the Motorway? We Save VAG Manual Gearboxes.

Specialist rebuilds for VW, Audi, SEAT, and Skoda manual transmissions. We replace failed bearings and worn synchros with uprated parts—saving you 50% vs a Main Dealer exchange unit.

Recognise these faults?

Volkswagen-Audi Group manual gearboxes are generally reliable, but when they fail, they fail in specific ways. If you are driving a VW Golf, Polo, Passat, Audi A3, or Seat Leon, look out for:

  • The "2nd Gear Crunch": A grinding noise when shifting quickly from 1st to 2nd. (Common Synchromesh failure).

  • The "Whine" at Speed: A constant droning noise that gets louder as you drive faster. (Bearing wear).

  • The "Bang" & Loss of Drive: Sudden loss of power and a hole in the gearbox casing. (Differential Rivet Failure).

  • Stiff Gear Change: Difficulty selecting gears, especially when the engine is cold.

The Dealer Solution:

Our Solution:

"You need a new gearbox." (Cost: £3,500+)

We fix the specific broken part.

We don't just repair. We Upgrade.

Many VAG gearboxes (specifically the 5-speed 02J/02T and 6-speed 02Q units) leave the factory with cost-saving measures that limit their lifespan. We reverse these engineering shortcuts.

1. The "Rivet-to-Bolt" Upgrade Factory differentials are held together with weak rivets. Over time, these shear off, fly through the casing, and destroy the gearbox.

  • Our Fix: We drill out the weak rivets and replace them with High-Tensile Aerospace Grade Bolts. This makes the differential bulletproof.

2. Precision Bearing Pre-load (Shimming) Factory gearboxes are assembled quickly on a production line. Often, the "shimming" (the tightness of the bearings) is too loose or too tight, leading to premature wear.

  • Our Fix: We use Timken or SKF uprated bearings and hand-measure the shimming to 0.01mm tolerance. This ensures your rebuilt gearbox runs smoother and lasts longer than a new one.

Volkswagen:

  • Golf, Polo, Passat, Caddy, Transporter with gearbox types: 5-Speed (02J, 0A4), 6-Speed (02Q, 02S)

Audi:

  • A1, A3, A4, TT with gearbox types: 6-Speed Manual (Quattro & FWD)

Seat:

  • Ibiza, Leon, Ateca with gearbox types: 5 & 6 speed manual

Skoda:

  • Fabia, Octavia, Yeti with gearbox types: 5 & 6 speed manual

Technician's Note: We also specialise in the VW Transporter (T5/T6) manual gearboxes, which often suffer from driveshaft spline wear. We fix this permanently.

Our Process: From Breakdown to Back on the Road

  • Diagnostic Drive: We test drive the vehicle to isolate the noise (bearing vs. gear set).

  • Removal & Strip: We remove the unit and strip it to the component level in our Kilmarnock workshop.

  • Chemical Clean: Every gear and shaft is cleaned to reveal microscopic wear.

  • The Rebuild: We replace worn synchros, install the Bolt Kit, and press in new Uprated Bearings.

  • Refill & Test: Filled with OE spec oil and road-tested to ensure factory-smooth shifting.

Why Choose Mechtronic?

  • Local Experts: Based in Kilmarnock, serving all of Ayrshire.

  • 6-Month Warranty: We back our engineering with a 6-month / 6,000-mile warranty.

  • Faster Turnaround: We rebuild on-site. No sending your gearbox away to a third party for weeks.

Don't let a crunching gear turn into a seized engine.

Catching a gearbox fault early saves the casing and shafts, keeping your repair bill low.
