Ford S-Max Gearbox Rebuild

We recently addressed a significant transmission issue on a Ford S-Max, which presented with difficulties engaging gears. Our initial diagnostic assessment quickly pinpointed the problem within the gearbox.

Upon professional disassembly of the transmission unit, our technicians identified a destroyed gear hub situated between the 1st and 2nd gear ratios. The gear hub is a critical component responsible for connecting the selected gear to the main shaft, enabling power transfer. Damage to this component typically results in grinding noises, difficulty shifting, or complete loss of engagement for the affected gears.

To restore optimal functionality, the repair involved a comprehensive overhaul. This included:

Replacement of the damaged gear hub: This new component ensures proper mechanical engagement for the affected gears.

Installation of new synchroniser rings on both sides of the gearbox: Synchroniser rings are crucial for smoothly matching the rotational speeds of the gear and the shaft before engagement, preventing grinding and facilitating effortless gear changes. Worn synchronisers are a common cause of hard or noisy shifts.

Full set of new bearings: Bearings support the rotating shafts and gears, reducing friction and ensuring precise alignment. Replacing them prevents excessive wear, reduces noise, and extends the lifespan of the entire transmission.

New shaft seals: These seals are vital for retaining the gearbox lubricant and preventing contaminants from entering the transmission, which can lead to premature wear and catastrophic failure.

The entire process, from box drop-off on Monday afternoon to full strip-down, parts sourcing, and complete rebuild, was efficiently executed, with the box ready for collection by Friday morning. This rapid turnaround minimises disruption for our customers while ensuring a high standard of repair.
