Getting to Grips with Gearboxes: From City Runarounds to Heavy-Duty Workhorses
Just like the vehicles they power, transmissions come in a massive variety of shapes, sizes, and setups. Here at Mechtronics in Kilmarnock, we see them all. Let’s take a look under the metal and break down the different types of gearboxes we work on every week.

If you’ve ever taken a drive through the winding back roads of Ayrshire or found yourself crawling through traffic on the A77, you know that your car’s gearbox works incredibly hard. It’s the mechanical heart of your driving experience, responsible for transferring all that engine power right down to the wheels.
But here’s the thing: not all gearboxes are created equal.

The Classic Manual: For the Purists
The trusty manual gearbox is still a staple on Scottish roads. It is generally smaller, lighter, and structurally simpler than its automatic cousins.
How it works: You press the clutch pedal to disconnect the engine from the transmission, manually select the gear using the stick, and release the pedal to re-engage the power.
Common issues: Because it relies heavily on driver input, the clutch takes the brunt of the wear and tear. A slipping clutch, a spongy pedal, or a distinct "crunch" when moving between gears are classic signs that your manual box needs some TLC.
The Traditional Automatic: Smooth Cruising
Automatic transmissions have surged in popularity, offering a much more relaxed drive—especially during rush hour! These units are typically larger and heavier than manuals because they house a complex labyrinth of planetary gears, hydraulic systems, and a torque converter.
How it works: It uses transmission fluid pressure to automatically shift gears based on your speed and engine load. You just put it in 'D' and go.
Common issues: Traditional automatics are highly dependent on clean transmission fluid. If the fluid gets low or contaminated, you might experience harsh shifts, delayed engagement, or warning lights on the dash.

The Dual-Clutch (DSG/DCT): The Best of Both Worlds
Modern technology has brought us the Dual-Clutch Transmission. These are incredibly complex pieces of engineering that are essentially two manual gearboxes mashed into one, controlled by a computer.
How it works: One clutch handles the odd gears (1, 3, 5) and the other handles the even gears (2, 4, 6). While you are driving in 3rd gear, the computer has already pre-selected 4th gear on the other clutch, allowing for lightning-fast, seamless gear changes.
Common issues: These gearboxes rely on precise "mechatronic" units (the electronic brain of the gearbox). Issues here can lead to jerky movements at low speeds, shuddering, or complete loss of drive. They require specialist diagnostic equipment to repair properly.
Commercial and 4x4 Gearboxes: The Heavy Lifters
A gearbox out of a Ford Transit or a Mitsubishi L200 is a completely different beast compared to a wee city hatchback. These units are massive, robust, and designed to handle immense amounts of torque, heavy payloads, and towing duties.
Common issues: Because these vehicles are worked hard, their gearboxes are subjected to extreme stress. Bearing failures, worn synchroniser rings, and heavy clutch wear are common. When a commercial gearbox fails, it means a business is off the road.
