Inside the Box: Rebuilding a Fiat Talento PF6 Gearbox for a Local Ayrshire Business 🚐⚙️

So, when the team from Ramsay & Jackson (based just up the road from us in Mauchline) dropped off a grumbling Fiat Talento transmission on a pallet, we knew we had to get it turned around fast, but more importantly, get it done right.

The culprit? The notorious PF6 gearbox. These units work incredibly hard hauling heavy loads across Ayrshire's roads, and over time, the internal bearings take an absolute beating.

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at our workflow for a full commercial gearbox rebuild, and why we refuse to cut corners on parts.

Step 1: The Teardown & The Impossible Bearing

A gearbox rebuild is essentially a high-stakes, oily 3D jigsaw puzzle. Once the pallet was unloaded, the first step was getting the unit onto the bench and split open.

Once inside, we strip the gear stacks down to the bare shafts to inspect every single gear, synchro ring, and bearing. Sometimes, the old parts don't want to let go. If you saw our social media posts recently, you'll have noticed a bearing race that was seized solid inside the casing. Instead of risking damage to the expensive aluminium housing with hammers and pry bars, we used an old-school engineering trick: we ran a hot bead of weld around the inside of the race. As the weld cooled, it shrank the metal, allowing the stubborn race to simply drop out!

Step 2: Why Quality Bearings Are the Heart of the Rebuild

Once the casing is clean and the shafts are prepped, it’s time for reassembly. This is the most critical part of the job.

Inside a manual gearbox, the bearings are responsible for keeping the heavy, spinning gear shafts perfectly aligned while handling massive amounts of engine torque. When a gearbox starts whining or crunching, it is usually because these bearings have worn down or collapsed.

You can find cheap, unbranded rebuild kits online, but fitting them is a false economy. Put a cheap bearing in a hard-working commercial van, and you'll be doing the exact same rebuild six months down the line.

That’s why, for the Ramsay & Jackson gearbox, we rebuilt the entire gear stack using premium Timken and NSK tapered roller bearings. These are Original Equipment (OE) quality parts. They can handle the heavy loads, they run silently, and they ensure that when this gearbox leaves our Kilmarnock workshop, it stays gone.

Step 3: The Reassembly & Final Checks

With the new Timken and NSK bearings pressed onto the shafts, we carefully reassemble the gear stacks, selectors, and synchro hubs. Everything has to be torqued to exact manufacturer specifications.

We then mate the casing halves back together, seal it up, and test the selector mechanisms to ensure every gear engages smoothly before it ever leaves the bench.
