VAG Manual Gearbox Repairs (VW, Audi, SEAT & Skoda)

Generally, these are robust, well-engineered transmissions, but specific generations and gearbox codes have well-documented factory weak points.

Whether you drive a daily-commuting Skoda Fabia, a hard-working VW Caddy van, or a high-torque Audi TT, we have the specialist extraction tools, press equipment, and technical knowledge to rebuild your VAG manual gearbox to exact factory tolerances.

Common VAG Manual Gearboxes We Rebuild:

The 02Q / 0FB Gearbox (Heavy-Duty 6-Speed)

This is the workhorse 6-speed transmission found in almost all modern 2.0 TDI (diesel) and 2.0 TFSI (petrol) VAG vehicles. While it can handle high torque, it frequently suffers from synchromesh degradation.

  • The Common Fault: A highly noticeable "crunch" or grinding sensation when shifting quickly into 2nd or 3rd gear. This is caused by premature wear on the brass synchromesh rings. We also frequently see input shaft end-float issues (excessive movement causing a rattling noise).

Models Covered:

  • VW: Golf (Mk5, Mk6, Mk7, Mk8 including GTI/GTD/R), Passat, Scirocco, Tiguan.

  • Audi: A3, S3, TT, Q3.

  • SEAT: Leon (including Cupra), Ateca.

  • Skoda: Octavia (including vRS), Superb, Kodiaq.

The 02T / 02U Gearbox (Light-Duty 5-Speed & 6-Speed)

These highly compact gearboxes are bolted to smaller, naturally aspirated, and smaller turbocharged engines (like the 1.0 MPI, 1.2 TSI, and 1.4 TSI).

  • The Common Fault: These units are notorious for a loud, high-pitched whining noise that changes pitch with your road speed. This is almost always caused by the failure of the twin differential bearings. If ignored, the bearings will collapse, dropping metal debris straight into the gearset and potentially blowing a hole in the aluminium casing.

Models Covered:

  • VW: Polo, up!, Golf (1.4/1.6 models).

  • SEAT: Ibiza, Mii, Leon (1.2 TSI).

  • Skoda: Fabia, Citigo, Rapid.

  • Audi: A1.

The 0A4 Gearbox (Mid-Duty 5-Speed)

This 5-speed transmission is heavily utilised in mid-range diesel vehicles and is extremely common in the commercial sector.

  • The Common Fault: We frequently rebuild these units for 5th gear failure or general input shaft bearing whine. Because they are often used in commercial applications, they take a lot of abuse and heavy payloads, accelerating bearing wear.

  • Models Covered: VW Caddy vans, older VW Golf 1.9/1.6 TDI, Audi A3 1.6 TDI, Skoda Octavia GreenLine.

Symptoms That Your VAG Manual Needs a Rebuild:

Don't wait for a complete failure. Bring your vehicle in for a diagnostic check if you notice any of the following:

  • The 2nd Gear Crunch: A physical grinding feeling through the gear stick when shifting up or down into 2nd gear.

  • Constant Whining: A droning or whining noise that is present in all gears and gets louder as you drive faster (classic differential bearing failure).

  • Stiff Gear Selection: Difficulty pushing the stick into 1st gear or Reverse when the engine is running and the car is stationary.

  • Jumping Out of Gear: The vehicle violently pops out of gear back into neutral when lifting off the accelerator.

Our VAG Bench Rebuild Process

We don’t just swap in a second-hand scrapyard gearbox with unknown mileage. We fully remove and strip your original transmission on the bench. Every gear, selector fork, and synchro hub is chemically cleaned and inspected. We replace all worn bearings with high-quality, heavy-duty alternatives and install brand-new OE-spec synchromesh rings, ensuring your VW, Audi, SEAT, or Skoda shifts exactly as it did when it left the factory.
