Automatic Gearbox Servicing: Fluid & Filter Changes
As independent transmission specialists, we provide comprehensive automatic gearbox servicing, fluid changes, and filter replacements to protect your vehicle and extend its lifespan.
The Myth of the "Sealed for Life" Gearbox
Your automatic transmission is one of the most complex and expensive components in your vehicle. Inside, a highly intricate maze of hydraulic channels, solenoids, and clutch packs work together to deliver seamless gear changes.
However, all of that friction and heat takes a toll. Over time, transmission fluid degrades, loses its protective properties, and becomes contaminated with microscopic metal shavings and clutch material. Without regular servicing, this contaminated fluid will eventually destroy the delicate internal components, leading to a catastrophic failure.
Many modern car manufacturers claim their automatic transmissions are "sealed for life" and never require a fluid change. But here is the candid reality: "lifetime" usually just refers to the length of the manufacturer's warranty period (typically 60,000 to 100,000 miles).
If you plan on keeping your car on the road past its warranty, or if you drive a high-mileage vehicle, a "sealed for life" gearbox is a ticking time bomb.
What happens if you don't service it?
Oil Degradation: Constant heat cycles break down the fluid's viscosity. It becomes thin and unable to maintain the hydraulic pressure needed to shift gears.
Sludge Buildup: As internal clutch packs wear down, the friction material mixes with the degraded oil, creating a thick, dark sludge.
Mechatronic Starvation: This sludge clogs the internal transmission filter and jams the tiny, highly sensitive solenoids inside the mechatronic valve body.
Total Failure: Starved of clean fluid and pressure, the gearbox begins to slip, shudder, and eventually fail entirely.
Symptoms Your Automatic Gearbox Needs a Service
If you are experiencing any of the following, your transmission fluid is likely degraded and in desperate need of a change:
Harsh or "Thumping" Shifts: A noticeable jolt when the car changes gear, especially when downshifting as you come to a stop.
Delayed Engagement: Taking several seconds for the car to actually move after shifting from Park into Drive or Reverse.
Slipping Gears: The engine RPMs spike, but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally.
Shuddering on Takeoff: A vibration felt through the car when pulling away from a standstill.
Overheating Warnings: Dashboard warnings indicating transmission temperatures are too high.
Automatic Transmissions We Service
We have the specific diagnostic equipment, adapters, and technical data required to service almost every modern automatic gearbox on the road today:
ZF Transmissions (6-Speed, 8-Speed & 9-Speed)
The industry-standard automatic, found heavily in BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, and Alfa Romeo.
Our Service: On ZF 6HP and 8HP units, the transmission filter is actually built directly into the plastic sump pan. We completely replace the entire sump/filter assembly, replace the mechatronic sealing sleeves (a common leak point), and refill with premium ZF-approved Lifeguard fluid.
Mercedes-Benz (7G-Tronic & 9G-Tronic)
Found across the entire Mercedes-Benz range. These require highly specific servicing procedures.
Our Service: We drain the torque converter (where applicable), drop the pan, replace the internal filter and gasket, and perform a strict temperature-controlled refill using genuine Mercedes-specification fluid to ensure perfect hydraulic pressure.
Aisin Automatics (EAT6, EAT8, TF-80SC)
Incredibly common transverse automatics used by Peugeot, Citroën, Volvo, MINI, Vauxhall, and Toyota.
Our Service: These units often suffer from sticky valve bodies when the oil gets dirty. We perform a thorough drain, flush, and refill with exact-spec AW-1 or equivalent fluid to restore smooth shifting and prevent valve body wear.
CVT (Continuously Variable Transmissions)
Found in Nissan, Honda, Toyota, and Audi (Multitronic). CVTs rely on a steel push-belt running on variable pulleys.
Our Service: CVTs are incredibly sensitive to dirty fluid, which can cause the belt to slip and permanently score the pulleys. We replace the specific CVT fluid and external filters to maintain absolute belt grip.
(Note: If you have a Dual-Clutch system like a VAG DSG or Ford Powershift, please see our dedicated DSG Repairs or Powershift Repairs pages for specific servicing details).
Our Professional Servicing Process
A proper gearbox service is not a quick 10-minute job. The fluid level in modern automatics is highly sensitive to temperature.
Diagnostic Health Check: We first scan the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for any hidden fault codes or excessive clutch wear adaptations.
Sump & Filter Replacement: We drain the old fluid, remove the transmission oil pan, clean the internal magnets (which catch metallic wear), and install a brand-new OE-quality filter and gasket.
Temperature-Controlled Refill: We refill the unit using premium, manufacturer-approved synthetic fluid. Using dealer-level diagnostics, we monitor the internal gearbox temperature live to ensure the fluid is leveled at the exact degree specified by the manufacturer.
Adaptation Reset: We reset the gearbox's learned adaptation values so the computer can re-learn the new fluid's viscosity and adjust its shifting strategy accordingly.
Protect Your Drivetrain Today
Routine servicing is a fraction of the cost of a full gearbox rebuild. Don't wait for the symptoms to start.
